Covalent bond
A bond formed by attraction between a shared pair of electrons and the positive nuclei of the bonded atoms.
Octet rule
The tendency of atoms to achieve 8 electrons in their outer shell.
Lewis formula
A diagram showing all valence electrons in a covalently bonded species, including bonding pairs and lone pairs.
Single bond
One shared pair of electrons between two atoms.
Double bond
Two shared pairs of electrons between two atoms.
Triple bond
Three shared pairs of electrons between two atoms.
Coordination bond
A covalent bond where both electrons in the shared pair come from the same atom.
Molecular geometry
The shape of a molecule based on the arrangement of electron domains around the central atom.
Electron domain
A region of electron density around a central atom, such as a bond pair or lone pair.
Bond pair
A pair of electrons shared between two atoms in a covalent bond.
Lone pair
A pair of valence electrons not used in bonding.
Bond polarity
The unequal sharing of electrons in a bond due to a difference in electronegativity.
Molecular polarity
The overall uneven distribution of charge in a molecule, depending on both bond polarity and shape.
