Bipolar Disorder (Manic Depression)
When mood changes radically from normal to depressed, to manic.
Schizophrenia
The most serious and dangerous of all mental illnesses. Nicknamed the “thinking disease”. Effects everything seen, sensed, moved, and pondered. It distorts reality
Treatment
Involves strong medications. They can cause impotence, lose please, and can’;t focus. You can become depressed
Medical Paradox
Meds do help and schizophrenics get better. They think they are better and stop along meds because of the side affects. They than crash and it comes back worse than ever
Cause
Heredity (Nature) and Environment (Nurture). People who experience difficult and hard lived lives are more likely to experience skitz
Diathesis Stress Hypothesis
People have a predisposition for skits. It gets triggered by the environment
Hallucinations
When you sense things that are not there. The brain betrays and you hear voices /see things
Delusions
Irrational beliefs.
Scrambled Speech or Movement
This includes shaking, stuttering, mumbling, jerky movements, loss of balance, loss of control of bowel movements, can’t tell temperature, or can’t control volume
Loss of Social Skills
Talks and yells at the wrong times
Catatonic States
Victim goes into motionless coma like state
Catatonic Schizophrenia
Gets catatonic states (slow and waxy movement)
Disorganized Schizophrenia
Speech and movements are scrambled. Move in jerky fashion
Paranoid Schizophrenia
Get delusions and hallucinations. Brain makes up a story line. Dangerous
Undifferentiated Schizophrenia
Two or more forms of schizophrenia
Residual Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is in remission
