1. Compulsions are repetitive in nature so the sufferers will feel compelled to repeat a behaviour.
2. Avoidance- attempt to reduce anxiety by keeping away from triggering situations
cognitive characteristics of OCD
1. Obsessions- reoccurring and unpleasant
2. Coping strategies- developed by sufferers to deal with stress to achieve relief, may distract from everyday acts
3. Insight into excessive anxiety- aware obsessions/compulsions are irrational
emotional characteristics of OCD
1. Extreme anxiety/distress- Obsessive thoughts are unpleasant and frightening- compulsions create anxiety
2. Depression- low moods with temporary relief from compulsions
3. Guilt and disgust- feels bad for themselves or are angry at their inability to do things
