In the video with the man sharing his NDE experience, who passed away in the car accident?
His wife and one of his children
Which quote from the Bible did the man in the video reinterpret after his NDE experience?
"Truly I tell you, whatever you did to the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did onto me."
Relationship between human pain and animal pain
Humans and animals both feel physical pain but only humans feel reflective pain
Animals experience this in nature and have the capacity for some emotional pain as well(think of whimpering dog when left home alone); felt by both humans and animals
Physical pain
Self-consciousness gives us the power to reflect on our own pain while we are aware of it; Intensified through depression and other reactions
Reflective pain
The belief that the first human beings were a single couple
Monogenism
The belief that there was more more than one couple, perhaps even thousands
Polygenism
What does Adam mean?
"Formed from the earth"
What does Eve mean?
"Giver of life"
Interior Consequences of Original Sin
-a decreased awareness of gods presence which means that it would now be harder for our free wills to move towards gods call
-that loss of focus on our transcendent calling means that the remaining sensual and egocentric desires have more influence on us, leading to a decrease in self-control
-tendency to sin(concupiscence)
Exterior Consequences of Original Sin
-our increased inclination to be selfish and indulge in evil desires would alienate us from our relationship with god, one another, and even nature
-projecting our own lack of love into god, societies were unable to move beyond awe and fear of god unto love and fascination
-our relationship to nature was poisoned with superstition and a belief that the material world was evil
A strong interest in power, material possessions, sexual indulgence, and other worldly "glories"; tendency to sin; more vulnerable to influence by the evil spirit
Concupiscence
Protomentalism is also known as
Panpsychism
Proposed to solve the problem of consciousness(that subjective experiences cannot be explained by physical processes) by saying that everything is conscious in some form; there is no hierarchy from the physical to the living to the conscious
Protomentalism
"The Hard Problem of Consciousness"
Any phenomenon that cannot seem to be explained by physical processes
They themselves derive meaning from the supreme notion of "the complete intelligibility of reality." Recall that our sense of "the complete intelligibility of reality" is what tells us where we still have gaps in our knowledge(what parts of the map are blank so to speak) and what informs every question we ask
Heuristic notions
Project Washoe discovered
The ability of chimpanzees to learn human sign language
What was the limitation of chimpanzees learning sign language founded by project washoe?
They can learn many signs in vocabulary but are unable to organize them with syntax
What is the significance of the limitation of the chimpanzees?
Animal intelligence does not extend to the formation of conceptual ideas, let alone to heuristic notions or transcendent awareness
Differences between human and artificial intelligence
-the transcendental desires
-formulation of conceptual ideas
-self-consciousness and the experience of inwardness
-trans-algorithmic mathematical thinking
5 transcendental desires
Truth
Love
Justice/goodness
Beauty
Home
Basically means think outside the box; think outside the set formulas and rules(algorithms) that govern a mathematical system
Trans-algorithmic mathematical thinking
The biggest contributor to the study of "interior presence" starts with the idea that a perception is always embedded in conscious experience
Phenomenology
Divides the world into the material and immaterial and then wonders how or if it can be integrated
Dualism
Exists in the physical world, but have transphysical property; it can be affected by purely mental phenomena(such as a conceptual idea)
Trialism
