who was skinner?
developed behaviourist theory, focusing on how behaviour is learned through reinforcement and punishment.
what is behaviourist theory?
believed behaviour is learned through interaction with the environment + that behaviour is shaped by rewards and consequences
what is operant conditioning
learning where behaviour is influenced by reinforcement (to increase behaviour) or punishment (to decrease behaviour)
what is positive reinforcement
adding a reward to encourage behaviour - like praise or stickers
what was the skinner box
an experiment where animals learned behaviours through rewards or punishments , showing how behaviour can be shaped.
how does Skinner’s theory link to childcare
practitioners use praise, rewards and clear consequences to encourage positive behaviour and discourage negative.
one limitation to Skinner’s theory
does not consider emotions or thoughts, and children may behave well only for a reward.
