Viral replication strategies
Replication strategies vary widely depending on viral genome type.
Classifications of viruses
Based on replication strategies, viruses are classified into seven groups: 3 DNA virus groups and 4 RNA virus groups.
One-step virus multiplication curve
A graphical representation showing the increase in virus particles over time after infection.
DNA viruses
Viruses that have DNA as their genetic material for replication.
Atypical eukaryal DNA viruses
Poxviruses are considered atypical due to unique features in their replication process.
Positive-sense RNA viruses
Viruses with RNA genomes that can be directly translated by host cells.
Negative-sense RNA viruses
Viruses with RNA genomes that need to be converted into the proper form before translation.
Retroviruses
Viruses that integrate their RNA genome into the host cell genome using DNA integrase.
Bacteriophages
Viruses that infect bacteria; can undergo a temperate cycle instead of a lytic cycle.
