Colony
A visible group of microorganisms that grew from a single cell or small group of cells.
Aseptic technique
Procedures used to prevent contamination by unwanted microorganisms.
Nosocomial infection
An infection acquired in a healthcare setting.
Healthcare-associated infection (HAI)
An infection acquired while receiving medical care.
Importance of Aseptic technique
Prevents the spread of bacteria and reduces infection risk.
BHI agar
Brain Heart Infusion agar used to grow many types of bacteria.
Nutrient Agar (NA)
Used for growing environmental bacteria.
SDA agar
Used for growing fungi such as yeast and molds.
Incubating plates upside down
To prevent condensation from dripping onto the agar.
Day 2 counts
Total colonies and number of different colony types.
Nucleus
Contains DNA and controls all cell activities.
Cytoplasm
Jelly-like material inside the cell.
Food vacuole
A membrane-bound sac where food is digested.
Chloroplast
An organelle that performs photosynthesis.
Eyespot (stigma)
A light-sensitive structure that helps detect light.
Pseudopodia
Temporary extensions used for movement and engulfing food.
Cilia
Short hair-like structures used for movement.
Flagellum
A long whip-like structure used for movement.
Protozoan using pseudopodia
Amoeba.
Protozoan using cilia
Paramecium.
Protozoan using flagellum
Euglena.
Euglena's capability
Can photosynthesize because it has chloroplasts.
