What is the first column called? (S^1)
Alkali metals. Highly reactive.
What is the second column called (s²)?
Alkaline earth metals

What is the most reactive metal and most reactive nonmetal?
Fr (radioactive so often consider Cs) is most reactive metal, F is most reactive non-metal. (Why the non radioactive halogens are diatomic)
What is the f block called? (And each line)
Inner Transition Metals. Top are lanthanoids (rare earth metals - lots of technology) and bottom are actinides. (LA)
What are the elements touching the staircase called?
Metalloids. (Starts at Boron, ends between Polonium and Astatine) (Doesn’t include Al bc it’s a metal)
How did Mendeleev order the periodic table?
In order of increasing atomic mass. (Because protons hadn’t been discovered yet). He put things in groups based on their properties of reactivity, & formula ratios. He was able to predict masses, reactivity and formula ratios.
What is column 17 (p5) called?
Halogens (often diatomic bc super reactive)
What is column 18 (p6) called?
Noble gases (not reactive at all)
What are considered noble metals?
Far away from Fr and F so least reactive. Rarely (not absolute) form compounds. Cu(copper), Ag(silver), and Au(gold). Why lot’s of jewelry is made from them
What are qualities of transuranim elements?
(Greater than U) All are man made (and ofc radioactive bc over 83)
What is only Liquid Metal?
Hg (mercury)
What is only liquid nonmetal?
Br (bromine)
What are the only gases on periodic table?
N, Cl, H, O, F (everything in BrIClHOF without Br)
What is it like when compounds form between group 1 metals and halogens?
They are super stable and it takes a huge endothermic reaction to decompose. (Have to use electrolysis of MOLTEN compounds) (meaning have to melt at super high temps and then add electrons)
