New cards

Things to know from introductory material:

- All three letters were most likely written toward the end of Paul's life and ministry. These letters of Paul were likely the last three letters he wrote, of the 13 letters we have in the NT.

- Timothy and Titus are often viewed as pastors of local congregations. However, as mentioned, their role is not actually that of permanent, resident pastor of a church. Rather, these men serve as Paul's apostolic delegates who are temporarily assigned to their present location in order to deal with particular problems that have arisen in their respective churches and require special attention.

Information from 1 Timothy Notes:

- Paul likely wrote 1 Timothy during a fourth missionary journey not recorded in the book of Acts.

- Ephesus was a wealthy and highly influential port city in the Roman province of Asia, renowned for its temple of Artemis.

- Ephesus was the capital city of Asia.

Purpose for writing 1 Timothy:

The Ephesian church was struggling with false teaching, and Paul writes to Timothy, who will teach and instruct and correct the Ephesian church on such matters. (Schreiner, Handbook, 373).

- While Timothy is still on assignment in Ephesus, Paul is no longer in Macedonia (1 Tim 1:3) but once again in prison, most likely in Rome (2 Tim 1:8).

- Paul was released from his first Roman imprisonment and then was arrested again and imprisoned in Rome. 2 Timothy reflects on his second imprisonment, and Paul realizes that this time, in contrast to his first imprisonment in Rome, he won't be released.

Information from Titus lecture notes

- Titus was written before his second imprisonment in Rome. Thus, before 2 Timothy.

- The theme of Titus is the inseparable link between faith and practice, belief and behavior. This truth is the basis for its critique of false teaching as well as its instruction in Christian living and qualifications for church leaders. (ESV Study Bible)

Geography and Population of Crete:

- Titus 1:5: "to appoint elders in every town." Kostenberger says that during the Roman period (when Titus was written), about 20 cities are attested in Crete.
