a doctor - describes subject of sentence (subject complement)
What type of complement is in: “I hit him and he cried.”
he cried - describes the object of “him” (object complement)
NOTE: Without a complement the sentence doesn’t make sense - but for adverbials if you take it off, it still makes sense
What type of complement is in: “She seemed upset after the meeting.”
upset - describes the subject of “she” (subject complement)

liar - describes the object of “him” - object complement
What Is A Copular Verb
A verb that doesn’t take on a direct object - always is abstratc
e.g. “I became a doctor” - became is copular

A copular verb (also called a linking verb) is:

It does not express action.
It expresses a state, identity, or condition.
