X-ray
A form of electromagnetic radiation with a very short wavelength, used in radiographic testing (RT) to inspect the internal integrity of a weld.
Yield point
The first stress in a material, less than the maximum attainable stress, at which an increase in strain occurs without an increase in stress.
Yield strength
The stress at which a material exhibits a specified limiting deviation from the proportionality of stress to strain.
Young's modulus
A measure of the stiffness of an elastic material, defined as the ratio of the stress to the strain in the elastic region.
Zero-defect
A quality control concept that aims for the elimination of all defects in a manufacturing or welding process.
Zirconiated tungsten (EWZr)
A tungsten electrode that contains a small amount of zirconium oxide; it is used primarily for AC welding of aluminum and magnesium because it retains a balled end and is highly resistant to contamination.
