Storming of the Bastille
A significant event on July 14, 1789, marking the start of the French Revolution.
Three Estates
The social hierarchy in France, consisting of the Clergy (First Estate), Nobility (Second Estate), and Commoners (Third Estate), with the latter being the largest group.
Treaty of Paris (1783)
The agreement that recognized American independence and settled territorial claims following the American Revolutionary War.
Continental Army
The colonial military force during the American Revolutionary War, commanded by George Washington.
Articles of Confederation
The original constitution of the United States, which was later replaced by the current Constitution.
National Assembly
The revolutionary assembly formed by the representatives of the Third Estate in France during the French Revolution.
Jacques Turgot
A key figure advocating for financial reforms prior to the French Revolution, opposed by the Parlement of Paris.
Third Estate
The class in French society comprising 97-98% of the population, which included peasants, artisans, and the bourgeoisie.
Estates-General
The legislative and consultative assembly in France that included representatives from all three estates; famously convened in 1789.
Tennis Court Oath
An oath taken by members of the Third Estate in June 1789, vowing not to disband until a new constitution was established.
