O2 content formula
Cao2 = (1.34 x Hb x (Sat/100)) + (0.003 x Pao2)
O2 delivery formula
DO2 = CO x (1.39 x Hgb x SaO2 + (0.003 x PaO2))
O2 consumption formula
VO2 = (CaO2 - CvO2) x CO
C(a/v) formula
C(a/v) = (1.34 x Hgb x S(a/v)O2) + P(a/v)O2 x 0.0031
Reservoir drainage time
It takes (level/flow x 60) to drain the reservoir.
O2 saturation calculation
O2 saturation = content/capacity
Stroke Volume (SV) formula
SV = EDV – ESV
Ejection Fraction (EF) formula
EF = (SV/EDV) x 100
Cardiac Output (CO) formula
CO = HR x SV
Cardiac Index (CI) formula
CI = CO/BSA
Flow Rate formula
Flow Rate = BSA x CI
Body Surface Area (BSA) formula
BSA (m2) = √((kg x cm)/3600)
Estimated Blood Volume (PBV) formula
PBV = kg x 70mL (adults)
Dilutional Hematocrit (Hct) formula
Dilutional Hct = (PBV)(Hct)/TBV
Total Blood Volume (TBV) formula
TBV = PBV + Prime
PRBCs calculation
PRBCs are calculated at a hematocrit of 60% if added to prime.
Pulse Pressure formula
Pulse Pressure = systolic – diastolic
Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) formula
MAP = diastolic + (PP/3)
Systemic Vascular Resistance (SVR) formula
SVR = (MAP - RAP) / CO x 80
Pulmonary Vascular Resistance (PVR) formula
PVR = (PAM - LAP) / 80 x 80
HCO3 correction formula
HCO3 Correction = (BE x kg) / 4
Hemoglobin oxygen carrying capacity
Each gram of hemoglobin carries 1.34mL of oxygen.
Oxygen solubility in blood
The solubility of oxygen in the blood is 0.0031mL/dL.
Weight conversions
There are 453 grams in a pound and 28.3 grams in an ounce.
Micrograms per drop calculation
Calculate micrograms per drop with 50mg/ml Nipride in 500ml D5W (60 drops/ml) = 1.667.
KCL concentration in CPG solution
To achieve 30 meq/l KCL in a CPG solution, add 30mEq of KCL to 0.9% NaCl.
Resulting Hematocrit in mixed blood
Mixing 5 liters of blood with Hct of 45% and 3 liters with Hct of 25% results in 37.5%.
