Latent, Active and Transition

what happens during the latent phase?

- amniotic sac breaks

- contractions become stronger (5-20 mins apart) and more frequent

- cervix dilates 3-4 cm and effaces (thins out)

- mom is admitted to hospital, pelvic exams are performed frequently

- 4-24 hours

what happens during the active phase?

- cervix dilates from 4 cm to 7 cm

- contractions are longer, more severe, and 3 to 4 minutes apart

- cervix dilates from 8 cm to 10 cm

- very strong contractions (60 to 90 seconds) occuring every few minutes

- mom starts to feel the urge to push
