Qualitative Interviews
A purposeful conversation between an interviewer and respondent, more interactive than face-to-face surveys.
Rich and Thick Data
Descriptive data that provides deep understanding of meanings and interpretations.
Interview Schedule: Structured
A type of interview where all questions, follow-ups, and probes are predetermined.
Interview Schedule: Semi-Structured
An interview format with a pre-determined set of topics and questions but allows deviation.
Interview Schedule: Unstructured
An interview format that has no preset questions and is completely free-flowing.
Active Listening
A process during interviews that involves attentive listening and adapting based on the interviewee's responses.
Reactivity
The impact that an interviewer’s response may have on the participant's answers.
Field Research
Research method used for topics best understood in their natural setting to gain comprehensive perspectives.
Complete Observer
A role in field research where the researcher does not interact or participate, maintaining unobtrusiveness.
Gatekeeper
A person who controls researcher access to a study group, influencing the researcher's ability to engage.
Purposive Sampling
A non-probability sampling technique that targets a specific group based on relevant characteristics.
Focus Groups
Small group discussions used to elicit and understand a range of opinions and experiences, typically with a trained moderator.
Transcribe
To convert recorded interview data into written text, word for word.
Field Notes
Observations and reflections recorded by the researcher during or after an interview.
Member Checks
A technique used to enhance the credibility of qualitative research by asking participants to review and validate the findings.
