Describe technological diffusions that occurred in the 1450-1750 time
period. Name the technology, its origins, and where it diffused.
- Lateen sail-Egypt-Indian Ocean
- Compass-China-Europe
- Astronomical Charts-Mesopotamia
- Caravel-Portuguese
- Carrack- Portuguese
- Fluyt ships- Netherlands
Describe new technologies of the 1450 - 1750 time period and specific
examples of how they facilitated patterns of trade and travel from 1450 to
1750.
Lateen Sail: The lateen sail was a use of new technology for trade. It was lightweight
and made sailing a lot faster because the less weight, the more smooth a trip can be. It
facilitated patterns of trade because with the use of these sails and now able to travel
longer distances, people could find new trade. routes along the way of a trip

Compass: The compass was used to point to which direction anybody holding it was
heading by using the magnetic force from the poles. Traders used this on the oceans so
that they knew which way they should guide their ship to get to their destination. The
compass facilitated patterns of trade by making it known easier what direction someone
is heading and makes directions a lot easier.

Astronomical charts: Astronomical charts were used to show a map of the stars in the
sky, which could help guide travelers in a certain direction. They facilitated patterns of
trade because the chart could be used to make a point of star and show where to go
from that point.
What is a lateen sail and why was it significant in the 1450-1750 time
period?
A lateen sail is a sail made out of a lightweight cloth material in the shape of a triangle. It
was significant in the use of allowing sailors to travel successfully into large bodies of
water, which ended up expanding trade routes.
What is a caravel and why was it significant in the 1450 to 1750 time
period?
A caravel is a light sailing ship that was used to explore the Coast of Africa. It is
significant because it made travelling a lot easier. It was easily-maneuverable and the
sails gave it speed for very long voyages.
Give an example of technology in the 1750-1900 time
period that facilitated trade and travel during that later time period.

What specific states supported maritime exploration in this time period?
Give specific examples of states and what they did to support exploration.
Portuguese- They established many trading posts and wanted to ensure the
monopoly of the spice trade
French- They sponsored exploration in search of a northwest passage
What were the economic factors that drove maritime exploration by
Europeans?
The Europeans wanted more land and more wealth. They used maritime exploration as
a way to trade with other people to align with them, but soon take over.
What were some of the economic outcomes of European maritime
exploration (positive and negative).
Positives: new trade routes established, built more of an economy from trading this way
becoming more popular, and political reasons such as creating more influential
alliances.
Describe the difference between the trading-post empire established by the
Portuguese in the Indian Ocean and the colonies they established in the
New World.
The difference between the trading-post empire by the Portuguese and the colonies
established in the New World is that the trading-post empire was filled with military
bases used for combat while the colonies in the New World were for slaves and labor
purposes.
Describe the Columbian Exchange.
Christopher Columbus introduced a new way in sharing ways by spreading disease,
animals, and foods. This created the process of bringing over new goods to where
Christopher Columbus found and created the Columbian exchange.
What factors caused the Columbian Exchange?
As Spanish soldiers brought Small Pox to the Europeans, a new wave of disease was
spread throughout the new land. Europeans brought over animals like pigs and cows for
meat such as pork and beef. It soon became a staple to the American diet. Africans
brought okra and rice to start growing it in America. Sugar was also brought over from
the Spanish where when it was brought over, made huge profits from it.
Describe the impact of the Columbian Exchange on the Western
Hemisphere (New World). Include both positive and negative outcomes.
The impact of the Columbian Exchange on the New World had positive and negative
outcomes. All until the arrival from Columbus, the American people never had any contact from diseases created in the East, which meant no population decrease.
Although, this meant that the Americans had no immunity to any sort of disease, so
when the Europeans came over, disease was spreading like wildfire. When pigs and
cows were brought over, the Spanish Americans had no idea what they were, causing many Americans to be very little fed by meat. When they were introduced to these animals, they now had a huge supply of meat, which then led to incorporating it into many dishes, feeding many who were not able to be fed before.
Describe the impact of the Columbian Exchange on the Eastern Hemisphere
(Old World). Include both positive and negative outcomes.
The impact of the Columbian Exchange on the Old World had positive and negative outcomes. Even though new diseases were brought to find cures for them, they also
removed population sizes frequently. The population decrease meant that it was hard to find laborers to keep the crops and animals in good shape to bring over to the West. Many crops that were from America were not known of by Europeans until the
exchange. Crops like corn, potatoes, tomatoes, beans, peppers, and cocao were new to the East. When they found it in America, they took it back to their homeland to grow, expanding the East's variation of food.
