What other New Testament book is Luke connected

What about the author of Luke
He was an educated individual, appreciated historian and was an artist and a Christian. He wasn’t an eye witness of Jesus, and refers to himself in the first person as the apostles Paul’s traveling companions
Who is Theophilus, what does it mean when he is the potential patron for the book?
Theophilus was the dedication for Luke, he was a fellow Christian and referred to as “most excellent”. He was a patron for the book (financial sponsor).
What is Luke’s “orderly account” how does that connect to how Jesus is portrayed?
Luke’s “orderly account” is to retell the events that have been fulfilled among us by God. That Jesus is a keeper of promises, and help us be confident in what Luke is teaching, “we know the truth.”
How does Luke portray Jesus as a prophet?
Jesus brings God’s word and healing and mirrors old prophets like Elijah and Elisha. He fulfils scripture (synougouge) and highlights the importance of the Holy spirit.

Basic plot: Mary visits Elizabeth and their both pregnant and Elizabeth recognizes her as the mother of the Lord.

Simeon’s encounter with the infant Jesus (2:22-38)
Characters: Simeon, infant Jesus, his parents, Anna
Basic plot: Simeon recognized that Jesus was the Messiah and so did Anna

The ministry and preaching of John the Baptist (3:1-20)
Characters: John the Baptist, crowds, tax collectors, Roman soldiers, Herod Antipas
Basic plot: Introduces John the Baptists and explains that he is going to prepare the way for the Lord and turn peopoles hearts.

Temptation of Jesus (4:1-13)
Characters: Jesus, devil
Basic plot: He was tested by the devil for forty days, and resisting to use his power, “Do not put the Lord your God to the test”

Jesus begins his ministry in Nazareth (4:14-30)
Characters: Jesus, people in the synagogue
Basic Plot: He would teach in the synagogue on the Sabbath day as it was his custom. He reads a scroll from Isaiah, addressed the Exile, and the people become mad at him.
Setting: Galilee then to Nazareth
Call of the disciples, Peter and Levi (5:1-11; 5:27-39)
Characters: Jesus, fishermen (Simon/Peter), Levi the tax collector, more tax collectors, Pharisees, scribes
Basic Plot: Jesus finds Simon on the Lake and Simon says “I am a sinful man” but does as he asks and leaves everything as Levi leaves everything when Jesus says “follow me.” Levi throws a party for Jesus and he is questioned for eating with the sinners.
Setting: Beside the Sea of Galilee then the tax collecting station
Sinful woman at the Pharisee’s house (7:36-50)
Characters: Pharisees, the sinful women, Jesus, Simon
Basic Plot: The sinful women repents to Jesus in front of everyone (rubs his feet, oil) and they are judged, Jesus corrects them and forgives the sins of the women because of her faith/repentance
Setting: Simon - Pharisees house
Parable of the Good Samaritan (10:25-37)
Characters: Expert of the law, Jesus, a man, priest, Levite, the Samaritan, robbers
Basic Plot: The expert of the law asks how shall he get eternal life and then asks who is his neighbor, Jesus responds with the parable. Show mercy to people.
Setting: Jerusalem to Jericho
Instructions on prayer (11:1-13)
Characters: Jesus, disciples
Basic Plot: The disciples ask Jesus how to pray and he tells them about perseverance in prayer, and God listens to those with faith.
Setting: a certain place that Jesus prays
The parable of the rich fool and teachings on possessions and worry (12:13-34)
Characters: the rich man, Jesus
Basic Plot: Jesus explains that you should be winning to give up everything for God and a warning about greed.
Setting: a crowd of people
Teachings about meals and hospitality (14:1-24)

Basic Plot: It is lawful to heal on the sabbath day, don’t let rest keep you from doing good. Stay humble and invite those to dinner who don’t get invites. Always drop things for the gates of heaven.

Parables about being lost and found (15:1-32)
Characters: Jesus, tax collectors, sinners, pharisees, father and the two sons
Basic Plot: That Jesus seeks for the sinners and not the righteous, as he is the save the sinners.
Setting: Dinner banquet
Parable of Lazarus and the rich man (16:19-31)
Characters: Lazarus, rich man, Abraham, angels
Basic Plot: The rich man failed to help Lazarus and the man had afterlife in hades while Lazarus was taken by salvation to heaven. Worldly wealth does not bring you salvation.
Setting: In the afterlife, Heaven and Hades
Parable of the unjust judge and the two men at prayer (18:1-14)
Characters: Jesus, judge, widow, tax collector, pharisee
Basic Plot: God tells to be persistent in prayer for he will always give us justice to those who have faith. Pray for yourself and in thanks to God, not as the Pharisee who compared himself to the tax collector, and the collector prayed for repentance.
Setting: a town and a temple
Zacchaeus (19:1-10)
Characters: Jesus, Zacchaeus a wealthy chief tax collector
Basic Plot: Shows that even the greatest sinners Jesus will always be drawn to as he found Zacchaeus in a sycamore tree. Shows again how Jesus saves the lost in repentance.
Setting: Jericho
Triumphal Entry (19:28-44)
Characters: Jesus, disciples, colt owner, crowd of disciples, Pharisees
Basic Plot: Jesus tells two disciples to get him a donkey and they do so. As he rides into Jerusalem he is praised by disciples while the Pharisees tell them to be quiet. Jesus weeps over Jerusalem as some did not recognize Gods coming.
Setting: Jerusalem, Mount of Olives
The arrest and trial (22:39-23:25)
Characters: Jesus, disciples, Judas, Chief Priests, guard of the temple, Peter, Herod, Pilate
Basic Plot: Jesus started by praying on the mount of olives, he then gets arrested. Peter disowns Jesus and he is mocked by guards. Jesus goes before Pilate and Herod who think he is innocent while the Sanhedrin thinks otherwise. The crowd demands for Barbara’s to be released and Pilate listens while putting Jesus to execution.
Setting: Mount of Olives, house of the high priest
The crucifixion and burial (23:26-56)
Characters: Soldiers, Simon from Cyrene, a crowd with a women, criminals, centurion, Joseph from the council
Basic Plot: A crowd was following him and Jesus told the women not to weep for him but for their children. As he was put up for execution he was mocked by the soldiers and crowd and one of the criminals. The other criminal believed he was deserving of his punishment but God was not. The centurion praised God and his innocence and Joseph came back for God even though he was apart of the council.
Setting: Jerusalem
The resurrection and Jesus’s appearances to the disciples (24:1-53)
Characters: women of Galilee, disciples, Cleopas
Basic Plot: Jesus has risen. The women found him and spread the word to the 11. Jesus appears to his disciples and explains that the prophecy has been fulfilled. He then ascensions into heaven.
Setting: Emmaus, Jerusalem
Big idea of Luke
How much Jesus is found eating in Luke. This is prominent only in the Gospel of Luke. Jesus is found often eating with the excluded or disadvantaged people. Jesus explains the table manners and expectations for dinner banquets. Give justice to those who don’t receive it.
