What is the moment of a force?
The turning effect of a force and it is the product of the force applied and the perpendicular distance of this force from the pivot
What is the formula for moment?
moment = force * perpendicular distance
What does the turning effect( moment) of a force depend on?
The size of the force applied
The distance from the pivot
What is the fulcrum/ pivot?
The point of rotation
What is the SI unit for moment
Newton metre (Nm)
What is a lever?
A simple machine which turns about a fulcrum when a force called the effort is applied to overcome another force known as the load
What is clockwise moment
When the turning effect of a force causes the object to turn clockwise about a fixed point
What does the principle of moment state?
When the total clockwise moments of an object are equal to the total anticlockwise moments, the objects will not turn
What happens when the total clockwise moments is more than the total anticlockwise moments?
The object will turn clockwise
What are the conditions for equilibrium?
The total forces of an object in one direction, is equal to the total forces in the opposite direction
The principles of moment
What is the effort?
The force applied
What is the load?
What u want to move
What is a first class lever?
fulcrum is between the effort and load
What is a second class lever?
load is between the pivot and the effort ( ELF)
What is a third class lever?
effort is between the fulcrum and the load ( FEL)
Give three examples of first class levers
see-saw
scissors
crowbar
Give three examples of second class levers
wheelbarrow
door
nutcracker
Give three examples of third class levers
broom
arm
ice tongs
