its an autoimmune disease, causes fluctuating weakness of certain skeletal muscles, can occur at any age, but most common between 10 and 65

amyotriphic lateral sclerosis (als)
a rare progressive neurological disorder, characterized by the loss of motor neurons, usually leads to death 2 - 6 years after diagnosis, onset between 40 - 60 years, more common in men than women
Multiple scierosis
degenerative disorder of the CNS, there is dissemination and demyelination of the nerve fibers, onset is usually between 15 and 50 years, women are more often affected than men, unknown cause. may be related to viral infections as well as genetic and immunologic factors, susceptibility is inherited
Muscular dystrophy
largest group of muscle disorders in childhood, its a genetic disorder, progressive degeneration of muscle fibers, characterized by progressive weakness and wasting of symmetric groups of skeletal muscle, basic deficit is unknown
Duchenne's MD
most severe and most common, follows an x-linked inheritance pattern - meaning males are almost exclusively affected, results from the gene that encodes dystrophin and causes it to be absent, live around 40 - 50 years

a non-progressive motor disorder of the CNS resulting in alterations in movement and posture, can get better with therapy
