what is the fundamental characteristics of all living things?
movement
3 types of muscle tissue
smooth, cardiac, skeletal
what are the 5 characteristics of all muscles
-extensibility: stretch, in other cells, they rupture
-conductivity: more than a local electrical change; leading to
muscle contraction
-responsivenes: respond to stimuli w electrical charges in nerve n muscle cells
-contractility: shortens, pulls on bones
elasticity: return to original state after stretching
what is skeletal muscle
voluntary striated muscle that is attached to the to 1+ bone
striations
alternating light and dark transverse bands: overlapping proteins in repeated patterns
involuntary muscles are never attached to what?
bones
a skeletal muscle is also called a what?
muscle fiber
is collagen excitable or contractile?
neither.
what properties does collagen have
It is somewhat extensible and elastic.
What role does collagen play when a muscle lengthens? what abt relaxes?
It resists excessive stretching and protects the muscle from injury when lengthen. When relaxing, its elastic recoil helps return the muscle to resting length and prevents it from becoming too flaccid.
what is the plasma membrane of a muscle fiber? cytoplasm?
sarcolemma -membrane
sarcoplasma- cytoplasm
