coordinate plane
A two-dimensional plane formed by the intersection of a vertical line (y-axis) and a horizontal line (x-axis).
gradient
A synonym for slope.
general form
The form of a line: Ax + By + C =0
slope intercept form
The form of a line: y=mx+b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept.
point slope form
The form of a line : y - y1 = m(x - x1), where (x1, y1) is a point on the line and m is the slope.
distance formula
A formula that calculates the distance between two points. Apply Pythagorean Theorem.
midpoint formula
Take the average of the x’s and the average of the y’s.
independent variable
Which variable are you directly changing?
dependent variable
Which variable responds to your input?
relation
A relationship between a set of ordered pairs.
domain
The set of all possible input values for a function.
range
The set of all possible output values for a function.

The set of all real numbers.

The set of all rational numbers. The Q represents “quotient.”

The set of all integers.

The set of all natural numbers.
vertical line test
A test used to determine if a relation is a function by checking if a vertical line crosses the graph more than once.
principal square root
The non-negative square root of a number.
composite function
A function that is formed by combining two functions. You plug one into the other.
inverse function
A function that reverses the operation of the original function. Swap the x and y, and then solve.
transformation
Manipulating position or size.
translation
A transformation that slides a subject up, down, or sideways.
reflection
A type of transformation that flips a subject over a line.
dilation
A transformation that resizes an object by a scale factor.
rigid transformation
Transformation that doesn’t alter the actual shape: you can move it, rotate it, but you may not dilate it.
horizontal line test
If a relation satisfies this, then its inverse is a function.
integers
Whole numbers and their opposites (-2, -1, 0, 1, 2). Say this with a German accent.
rational numbers
Numbers that can be written as a quotient of two integers.
natural numbers
Numbers you can count (includes 0 in this test).
real numbers
Numbers you can graph on the usual number line.
asymptote
A line or bound that a function can’t seem to reach.
identity
Always holds true no matter your input.
parallel lines
These have the same slope.
perpendicular lines
These have opposite reciprocal slopes.
