MRS NERG
An acronym summarizing the 7 life processes: Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Nutrition, Excretion, Reproduction, Growth
Movement
A life process involving the movement of the whole organism or part of it.
Respiration
A life process involving the release of energy from food.
Sensitivity
A life process involving the ability to detect and respond to stimuli.
Nutrition
A life process involving the intake and use of food.
Excretion
A life process involving the removal of waste products.
Reproduction
A life process involving the production of new organisms.
Growth
A life process involving an increase in size or complexity.
Classification
Organising living things into groups based on their similarities.
Taxonomy
The science of classifying living organisms.
5 Kingdoms
Plants, Animals, Fungi, Bacteria, Protists.
Vertebrates
Animals that possess a backbone.
Invertebrates
Animals that do not possess a backbone.
Mammals
Vertebrates with fur; females produce milk for young; warm-blooded and give birth to live young.
Reptiles
Vertebrates with dry scales; cold-blooded; lay eggs on land and breath air.
Fish
Vertebrates that have gills for breathing in water, tails and fins for swimming, and scales.
Amphibians
Vertebrates with moist, smooth skin, that lay eggs in water, start as tadpoles with gills, and develop into adults with lungs.
Birds
Vertebrates with feathers, wings, lay hard shelled eggs on land and have beaks.
Arthropods
Invertebrates with jointed legs, segmented bodies, and an exoskeleton.
Insects
Arthropods with 6 legs, 1 pair of antennae, and 3 body segments (head, thorax, abdomen).
Arachnids
Arthropods with 8 legs and 2 body parts.
Crustaceans
Arthropods with at least 10 legs and 2 pairs of antennae that mostly live in water..
Myriapods
Arthropods with at least 20 legs, many body segments, and 1 pair of legs on each body segment.
Adaptations
Characteristics or behaviors that help an animal to survive.
Behavioral Adaptation
Actions that help an organism survive (e.g., migration).
Food Chain
A diagram that shows the transfer of energy from one organism to the next.
Producer
An organism that uses light energy from the sun to make food through photosynthesis.
Primary Consumer
An organism that eats producers.
Secondary Consumer
An organism that eats primary consumers.
Tertiary Consumer
An organism that eats secondary consumers.
Carnivore
An animal that eats other animals.
Herbivore
An animal that eats plants.
Omnivore
An animal that eats both plants and other animals.
Food Web
A diagram showing many interconnected food chains in an ecosystem.
Endangered
A species at risk of extinction.
Biodiversity
The variety of life in an ecosystem.
Deforestation
The clearing of forests for other uses.
Conservation
Protecting and saving the natural world and all species, in order to maintain biodiversity and protect all ecosystems.
