Ch. 9 — The Heart of Darkness: EUrope as a Concept: What is it about?

This chapter presents fragments that aim to give insights into what constitutes Europe in the context of the image its museums present. This image is visible in Little Europe, which is located in Brussels. Equality and the right to movement within Europe are talked about, but this stands in stark contrast to reality. This contrast is so immediate that a migrant cannot even enter the museum itself. This is part of the process of shaping what "Europe" is, and by defining Europe, its opposite/outsider is simultaneously defined. There are attempts to hide this opposition by encouraging people to rely on "memory," which also promotes the idea that the history of colonialism is a distant past — even though it is not.

Conclusion — Dismaland and Anxieties in Europe: What is it about?

Banksy put on the art show Dismaland which shows us that we are already living in a dystopian future. Loftsdóttir connects this to other museums and theme parks that are clear reflections of Europe’s colonial past. She mentions narratives about Europe as ‘finished’ and points out that the narrative of Europe being under siege does not only come from populists.
