Giving something a name that belongs to something else, used to shape how we think and understand the world.

Source Domain

Something familiar and concrete (like a journey) used in metaphors.

Target Domain

Something abstract (like love or life) that is explained using metaphors.

Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT)

A theory stating that metaphors shape how we think and understand the world, not just how we talk.

Charteris-Black

Combines Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Conceptual Metaphor to study how metaphors shape ideologies.

Identification (Metaphor Analysis)

Spotting metaphors that don’t match the literal meaning (e.g., “fighting a virus”).

Interpretation (Metaphor Analysis)

Identifying the conceptual metaphors behind the language by looking for patterns (e.g., food, madness, battle).
