Erythropoiesis
The process of making red blood cells (RBCs) from pluripotent stem cells in the bone marrow.
Reticulocyte
An immature 'baby' red blood cell.
Erythropoietin (EPO)
A hormone released by the kidney that stimulates the bone marrow to produce red blood cells.
Hemoglobin
The protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen.
Hyperbilirubinemia
The accumulation of bilirubin in the blood, leading to jaundice.
Transferrin
A protein that transports iron in the blood.
Complete Blood Count (CBC)
A lab test that measures the amount of hemoglobin, hematocrit, number of red blood cells, and other components in blood.
Iron Deficiency Anemia
Anemia caused by a lack of iron, leading to a decreased number of mature red blood cells in circulation.
Hemolytic Anemia
Anemia characterized by the destruction of red blood cells faster than their production.
Normocytic Normochromic Anemia
Anemia with normal-sized and normally colored red blood cells, typically occurring after acute blood loss.
