Flappers
Young women in the 1920s known for their energetic freedom and pushing barriers in economic, political, and sexual freedoms.
Great Migration
The movement of African Americans from rural South to urban North and West in response to Jim Crow laws and economic opportunities.
Harlem Renaissance
A cultural, social, and artistic explosion that took place in Harlem, New York, during the early 20th century.
Prohibition
The legal act of prohibiting the manufacture and sale of alcohol, established by the 18th Amendment.
Dust Bowl
A severe drought and dust storm period in the 1930s that devastated the Southern Plains of the United States.
The New Deal
A series of programs and policies enacted by FDR to provide relief, recovery, and reform during the Great Depression.
Buying on credit
A purchasing method where consumers buy goods with the promise to pay later, often leading to overextension.
Immigration Quotas
Laws established in the 1920s to limit the number of immigrants allowed into the U.S., beginning with the Emergency Quota Act.
