What two categories can polymers be broken down into?
Thermoforming and thermosetting.
Characteristics of thermoforming plastics:
Mostly recyclable
Can be shaped and reshaped under heat
Plastic memory
Made of long polymer chains with few crosslinks
Characteristics of thermosetting plastics:
Initially set by heat
Cannot be reshaped
Extremely strong and durable
Common in resin or powder forms
Consist of polymer chains with strong bonds between each chain
Does a thermoforming or thermosetting plastic have more bonds? Explain.
A thermosetting plastic has more bonds holding it together, whereas a thermoforming plastic has less bonds so that it can be reshaped.
What are the main properties of thermoforming polymers?
Waterproof
Lightweight
Durable
Good strength to weight ratio
Tough
Easily coloured
Scratch/corrosion/chemically resistant
Good flexibility
Why are thermoset plastics used for electrical fittings?
Waterproof
Durable
Hard
Scratch resistant
Resist high temperatures
Electrical insulators
What are the polymer stock forms?
Sheet
Film
Granules
Rod/ other extruded forms
Foam
Powder
