How to side the Calcaneus
Face the facet for the talus upward. The side that the flat side of the body is on, is the side of the body it is from
Right --> flat side faces to the right
Left --> flat side faces to the left
How to side the Talus
Face the articular surface for the tibia towards you. The head of the talus will point to the big toe from the side of the body it is from.
Right --> The head of points towards the left
Left --> The head points towards the right
How to side the Navicular
Hold the bone so that the notch is pointing upwards. Hold the notch in your hand so the large facet is facing medially. The hand of the body you are holding it with, is the side of the body it is from.
Right --> Holding the notch superiorly with the right hand
Left --> Holding the notch superiorly with the left hand
How to side the Cuboid
Hold the flattest side of the bone towards you. Make sure the pointy part of the bone is pointing down. The side of the bone that is noticeably smaller is the side of the body it is from.
Right --> The smaller side is on the right side
Left --> The smaller side is on the left side
How to side the medial cuneiform
Find the L shaped facet and face that towards you. The teardrop facet should be facing upwards. Look at the L shaped facet (the waterfall), and the side that the waterfall is flowing down towards, is the side of the body it is from.
Right --> The waterfall facet pointing down to the right
Left --> The waterfall facet pointing down to the left
How to side the intermediate cuneiform
Find the L-shaped facet and make the longer side of the L horizontally and inferiorly. The little part of the L shape should be facing up. The L has to be facing medially. When the L shape is facing medially, this is the side of the body it is from.
Right --> L shaped facet facing medially to the left
Left --> L shaped facet facing medially to the right
How to side the lateral cuneiform
Locate the butterfly facet and face that towards you with the dorsal (bigger side) facing up and the smaller side facing down. The side of the bone that has the butterfly facet is the side of the body it is from
Right --> Butterfly facet on the right side
Left --> Butterfly facet on the left side
How to side MT1
Locate the flat side of the bone, this is the anterior portion of the bone. The base of the bone has a facet on it which has a more curved side and a more flat side. The curved "C" shape of the base faces medially to the body and the straighter side of the base is lateral and points to where the other toes go. The medial side dictates the side of the body it is from.
Right --> C shape is medially to the left
Left --> C shape is medially to the right
How to side MT2
The side of that the double facet is on when facing MT3 is the side of the body it is from. Also, make sure the flat side of the bone is superior.
Right --> Double facet on the right
Left --> Double facet on the left
