What are the 5 main ethical guidlines?

Informed consent, Confidential, Debriefing, Deception, and Protect from harm

Informed consent

All participants must know what their participation will involve and what risks might develop before they consent to participating in the study. Even after giving informed consent, participants retain the right to withdraw from the study at any time for any reason.

Confidential

All data gathered on individuals must remain completely confidential and when possible completely anonymous.

Debriefing

After the study is completed, researchers should inform participants of its purpose and methods.

Deception

Must only deceive people when it is absolutely essential to the study and must tell at the end of study during debriefing.

Protect from harm

Must minimize any discomfort or risk involvement in the study and must act to prevent participants from suffering any long-term negative consequences.

Institutional Review Boards

Positive Correlation

Two variables increase and decrease together Ex: the number of gallons of gas pumped is positively correlated to amount spent on gas.

Negative Correlation

Two variables move in opposite directions Ex: miles traveled are negatively correlated to the amount of gas left in your tank.

more predictable variables Ex: As the number of gallons of gas pumped increases so dues the amount spent on gas.

Weak Correlation

less predictable behavior Ex: The color of the car is darker because more gas is used.

Correlation Coefficient

statistical measure that shows the degree of relationship between variables

0\.0-0.3weak to none, 0.3-0.5-weak,0.5-0.7 moderate, 0.8-1 strong
