Lymphatic Vessels
Transport escaped fluids back to the blood
Lymphatic Capillaries
recollects fluid that the blood capillaries have left behind, tries to return fluid to the vena cava
Lymph
fluid of capillary system
Right Lymphatic Duct
right arm and chest
Thoracic Duct
every other part of the body
Venous system
empties into subclavian vein and internal jugular junction
Lymphatic System
a series of tubes through the body that drains tissues out of the body
Lymph Nodes
filter any pathogens
Lymph Capillaries
has definitive end, forces fluids out to let fluid in, but theres no filter
Lacteals
responsible for absorbing lipids from food
Lymphangitis
inflamed lymphatic vessels, lymph(infected) running through vessels, visible through skin, red streaks
Lymphedema
swelling due to lymphatic vessels being blocked
Lymphocytes
B cells and T cells (white blood cells)
Macrophages
phagocytize foreign substances and debris
Dendritic Cells
phagocytes that grab pathogens
Reticular Cells
create filter structures as lymph moves through the system(supports other cells)
Diffuse Lymphatic Tissue
loaded with lymphoid cells, embed parts of our immune system into organs
Lymphoid Follicles
larger concentrated lymphatic tissue in areas constantly under attack
Lymph Nodes
loaded with cells of the immune system, 4 or more afferent vessels, 2 efferent vessels, moves lymph slowly, buying time for cells to recognize any foreign substances
Buboes
swollen lymph nodes, large number of bacteria and virus
Cancer
non-tender, painless, lymph nodes
Peyer's Patches
Prevent foreign substances from entering intestinal wall, ensures that things we dont want dont conquer our immune system, kills off bacteria in gut
Appendix
gut bacteria
Appendicitis
inflammation of the appendix, sprays bacteria over the abdominal cavity, resulting in sepsis
Spleen
largest lymph nodes, amazing ability to filter out lymphatic tissue and blood, major player in establishing blood supply, creates new blood cells as a fetus
Splenectomy
removal of spleen when hemorrhaging, kids can regenerate spleen
Thymus Gland
programs T cells
Tonsils
traps foreign pathogens
Elephantiasis
parasitic worms grow into bottom of foot, blocking off lymph nodes, resulting in edema
Hodgkin's Disease
lymphoma(cancer in lymphatic system), malignant B cells
Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma
all lymphomas other than Hodgkin's lymphoma, tissue and young kids
Sentinel Node
first node closest to cancer(swollen and nonpainful)
