define metabolism
the rate at which chemical reactions take place in our cells
What are enzymes
biological catalysts that speed up rate of reaction without being used
what is the substrate
a substance which binds to an enzyme
what is the active site
the place on the enzyme where the substrate binds
increasing temperature of enzyme lead to?
reaches optimum, but then after that it becomes denatured and active site changes shape and substrates no longer fit
Enzyme required practical temperature method
add 5cm starch solution to a test tube and heat in a beaker of water using a Bunsen burner. Set up a spotting tile and add a drop of iodine solution to each of the wells. Add 2cm amylase to start solution and mix. every minute add a droplet to a spotting tile. repeat until solution stops changing colour and then amylase has broken down all the starch. Repeat at same temp then do different temps
Enzyme required practical temperature analysis and results
When the iodine stops changing colour the reaction is complete. The faster the reaction stops, the faster the activity of the enzyme amylase. at 60 degrees plus it never stops changing, because the enzyme has denatured and cannot break down the starch.
What is CORMMS
change, organism, repeat, measurement 1, measurement 2, same
PH on enzymes
Moving far away from the optimum ph of an enzyme will denature it.
