Element

A substance that contains only one type of atom, characterized by its atomic number.

Compound

A substance that contains two or more elements chemically bonded together.

Mixture

A substance that contains two or more elements and/or compounds which are NOT chemically bonded.

Alloy

A mixture of metals, usually made to enhance the properties of the base metal.

Corrosion

The process that happens when metals react, such as rusting when iron reacts with air and water.

Paint coating

A method of preventing corrosion by applying a layer of zinc or lead paint to prevent rust.

Grease/Plastic coating

A method of preventing corrosion using unreactive polymers or non-rusting to coat materials.

Sacrificial Protection

A method of preventing corrosion using a coating of a metal which has a higher reactivity.
