Hand Washing(need: water, soap, paper towels)
“Hi, my name is Jillian Sistrunk. I will be your CNA today. I will be preforming the skill of handwashing” (explain every step)
turn on water & wet hands
lather hands in soap and scrub for at least 20 seconds before rinsing thoroughly
rinse all surface, keeping hands below elbows
dry hands and wrists with paper towel and place in trash
turn off faucet with new paper towel and place in trash

knee high elastic stocking (need: TED hose)
introduce self and skill (explain everything as it is done)

patient is in supine position
turns stocking inside out up to the heel
place foot of stocking over toes —> foot —> heel
moves foot + leg gently avoiding force and overextension
make sure no twists or wrinkles in the stocking
over the heel and opening in toe area

Donning and Removing PPE

Pick up and unfold gown

with one gloved hand, grasp palm of other hand, remove glove
ball up removed glove in gloved hand
slips fingers from ungloved hand underneath cuff of remaining glove at wrist and remove glove to make it inside out
dipose of gloves
unfasten gown at waist and neck
remove gown without touching outside of gown by reaching into the cuff and balling it up from left to right arm
keep gown inside out as you roll it up
dispose of gown

make sure pt’s chest is covered
remove gown from unaffected arm (left) side first then the right arm

ask what they’d like to eat first
offer pt one bite of each food on tray, telling them what it is
offer drink after every bite
ask pt if they are ready for next bite of food or sip of drink
at end of meal, clean pt’s mouth with clothing protector and use napkin with 1 swipe for each hand
remove food tray
leave pt in upright position
give call light and privacy if wanted
take tray and put on hallway cart

remove gown and place directly in soiled linen, making sure pt is covered

wash eyes (without soap), using different corner of washcloth for each stroke (inner to outer aspect of eye), then using new corner go from bottom to top of face, drawing out E
dry eyes and then face using same motions and order
expose one arm and place towel underneath arm

wash fingers (fingernails too) and hand, then fold towel with each corner folded in and snake up arm up to shoulder
then repeat with wet towel
then repeat with dry towel
put on clean gown started with affected arm, placing gown over sheet and pull sheet out from under gown
put sheet back on pt
empty & rinse water into commode, and dry basin and place in dirty section
live soap for pt
dispose of linen into soiled linen contain
remove and dispose of gloves into waste
