Circulatory System
A system in animals that facilitates the exchange of materials, typically consisting of a central pump, a vascular system, and a circulating fluid.
Open Circulatory System
Type of circulatory system where fluid is pumped through open-ended tubes and flows out among cells, found in many invertebrates, most mollusks, and all arthropods.
Closed Circulatory System
Type of circulatory system where blood is pumped within closed tubes, distinct from the interstitial fluid, found in nearly all other animals.
Cardiovascular System
The closed circulatory system in humans and other vertebrates, consisting of the heart, blood, and three types of blood vessels:arteries, capillaries, and veins.
Single Circulation System
Circulatory system where blood flows only once through the heart in a single loop, found in bony fishes, rays, and sharks.
Double Circulation System
Circulatory system where blood flows twice through the heart, once between the lungs and heart in the pulmonary circuit, and a second time between the heart and the rest of the body in the systemic circuit, found in amphibians, reptiles, and mammals.
Pulmonary Circuit
Carries blood between the heart and lungs, facilitating the exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen.
Systemic Circuit
Carries blood between the heart and the rest of the body, supplying oxygen to body tissues and picking up carbon dioxide.
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
Condition where blood clots form in the veins of the legs, which can lead to dangerous obstructions in the cardiovascular system.
