B) How is Jesus the “New Moses” and the “New Adam”? New Moses:
Moses gave the 10 Commandments on a mountain → Jesus gave the Beatitudes on a mountain.
Moses led people to freedom → Jesus frees us from sin.
Moses shared God’s law → Jesus fulfills and deepens God’s law.
B) How is Jesus the “New Moses” and the “New Adam”? New Adam:
Adam disobeyed God and brought sin into the world → Jesus obeyed God and saved us from sin.
Adam broke the relationship with God → Jesus restored it by sacrificing himself.
Blessed are the poor in spirit:
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven
- Be humble and rely on God
Blessed are they that mourn:
for they shall be comforted.
- It's okay to be sad, God will help you heal
Blessed are the meek:
for they shall inherit the earth
- Be gentle, not bossy or proud (Golden rule)
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst after righteousness:
for they shall be filled
- Standing up for justice
Blessed are the merciful:
for they shall obtain mercy.
- Be merciful and forgiving
Blessed are the pure in heart:
for they shall see God.
- Keep your heart honest and clean
Blessed are the peacemakers:
for they shall be called the children of God.
- make peace with oneself and others
Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake:
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
- Don’t give up doing what’s right, even when it's hard
E) How are the Beatitudes “Countercultural”?
Before Jesus, people were told that God is something to be feared, and that anyone who slightly strays from the way of God will be punished and shamed.
Jesus and the Beatitudes counter that thought by spreading the idea that God is good and will reward those who follow him, not harm them.
