what did the south of ireland do

• declared neutrality, meant ireland wouldnt fight or support either side

• neutrality showed how independent the country was

• ireland was too weak

• government passed emergency power act

• built up the defence forced incase we were invaded

• censored the radio and papers to maintain neutrality

• favoured the allies, allowed planes to fly out over donegal and let allied people who crashed over the border

• rationing because of food shorteged

• compulsory tillage orders menat farmers had to frow more wheat

• electricity and gas rationed, flimmer men ensured people werent using the gas left in pipes

• turf replaced coal

• lack of jobs meant people emmigrated

• people joined british army

What was life like in northern ireland during ww2

• They took an active part

• industrial contrbutions of ammo, ventilation stuff, warships, planes and linen for parachuts

• agricultural contribution of arable, milk, britains eggs, production of flax, exports of livestock

• half the houses destroyed

• bombings showed great poverty in the working class

• southern government sent fire brigades up to help
