Qualitative data
Descriptive information represented in word form.
Quantitative data
Numerical data represented as numbers, measurements, or graphs.
Independent Variable
The variable in an experiment that is manipulated or changed on purpose; located on the x-axis.
Dependent Variable
The variable in an experiment that is measured; located on the y-axis.
Controlled Variables
The parts of an experiment that remain constant and unchanged.
Control group
The group in an experiment that does not receive the independent variable and is used for comparison.
Testable questions
Questions that can be conclusively answered through scientific research.
Acids
Substances with a pH of 0-6.9 that produce H+ ions and taste sour.
Bases
Substances with a pH of 7.1-17 that produce OH- ions and taste bitter.
Enzymes
Proteins that speed up chemical reactions and lower activation energy.
ATP
A molecule that provides a usable form of energy to the cell.
Photosynthesis
The process by which plants convert sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water into glucose and oxygen.
Mitosis
The part of the cell cycle in which the nucleus divides to form two identical cells.
Meiosis
A type of cell division that reduces the chromosome number by half, forming four non-identical cells.
Genotype
The genetic makeup of an organism in terms of allele combinations.
Phenotype
The observable characteristics or traits of an organism resulting from the genotype.
Codominance
A genetic scenario where both alleles are expressed equally in the phenotype.
Genetic Engineering
The process of altering the genetic material of an organism.
Natural Selection
The process where organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring.
