1
New cards

collision

When one moving object hits another

2
New cards

A Collision

Moving object collides with still object

3
New cards

B Collision

2 moving objects collide

4
New cards

force

A push or pull on an object

5
New cards

Kinetic energy

The energy of motion (moving energy)

6
New cards

Damage

Permanent change in shape (deformation)

7
New cards

Deformation

When an object bends or changes shape- temporary or permanent

8
New cards

Elastic limit

This is the largest amount the sample could be deformed and still return to its original shape after the force on it was removed.

9
New cards

Breaking point

The maximum amount of force or deformation an object can withstand beyond which it will crack or split apart.

10
New cards

Peak force

The time at which a force is the strongest (maximum force).

11
New cards

What happens in a collision between two objects?

the objects make contact with each other; sometimes something is damaged, but not always.

12
New cards

What can a collision cause the objects involved to do?

change motion and/or change shape.

13
New cards

What kind of transfer occurs during a collision?

energy transfer

14
New cards

What is there between objects when they make contact during a collision?

a force or forces

15
New cards

All solid objects do THIS when pushed on in a collision

bend or change shape

16
New cards

What does it mean when objects have different elastic limits?

It means they have a different maximum amount of deformation they can withstand, beyond which it will deform permanently.

17
New cards

What does it means when object have different breaking points?

It means they have different maximum amounts of deformation they can withstand, beyond which it will crack or split apart.

18
New cards

How strong forces do objects that make contact with each other apply on each other in opposite directions?

Equally strong forces

19
New cards

What kind of force do objects that collide apply on each other during the collision?

an equally strong peak force (maximum force)

20
New cards

What does increasing the speed or mass of a moving object do?

Increase its kinetic energy and peak force

21
New cards

Will increasing the speed of an object increase the forces during the collision?

Yes

22
New cards

Will increasing the mass of an object increase the forces during the collision?

Yes

23
New cards

When does a collision start? Explain using an example.

A collision starts at the moment two objects touch. An example would be a cell phone hitting the ground. The collision starts the moment the cell phone and ground touch.

24
New cards

If a sled pushes with a force of 50 N on a snowman, how much force will the snowman push on the sled with? Explain.

The snowman will push 50 N of force back on the sled - equal and opposite!

25
New cards

What is an elastic limit? Explain using an example.

An elastic limit is the greatest amount of deformation an object can withstand and still go back to its original shape. When we pushed on styrofoam, it stayed bent after pushing with a certain force

26
New cards

What is a breaking point? Explain using an example.

The breaking point is the maximum amount of force or deformation an object can withstand and beyond that point it will crack or split apart. When we added force past the styrofoams elastic limit, it broke in half.

27
New cards

What is kinetic energy? Explain using an example.

Kinetic energy is the energy of motion. Any object that is moving has kinetic energy. A ball rolling down a hill would have kinetic energy because it is in motion.

28
New cards

Increases in speed or mass of a moving object can result in an increase of what?

in the peak forces that are applied to both objects that make contact during the collision.

29
New cards

The strength of both forces during a collision are...

the same but in opposite directions

30
New cards

What is kinetic energy the energy of?

Motion

31
New cards

When objects have more speed, they have more of what?

Kinetic energy

32
New cards

The 2 things that affect an object's elastic limit and breaking point are:

thickness and material

33
New cards

When object collide, they apply an equally strong what?

an equally strong peak force
