Democracy

• Allowed ALL white males to vote regardless of status

• High interest groups and sectional issues increased voter participation

Indian Removal Act of 1830

• Jackson wanted tribes to move west

• Indian Americans tribes signed treaties with the Fed Govt to move west

• Cherokee tried to sue Georgia to keep their land but Chief Marshall did not hear case it was a “dependent nation”

Nullification crisis

• Congress passed tariff (tax) on imports to save american businesses

• South had to buy goods from New England

• Vice pres Calhoun believed each state could nullify a federal law if it was unfair, if they couldn’t nullify the state they couldn’t withdraw from union

• Jackson wanted to save union

South Carolina

• South Carolina threatens to leave Union if forced to pay tariff

• Jackson fights South Carolina if they refused to pay

• Senator Clay’s bill would lower tariffs

Jackson Opposes Bank of the U.S

• The Bank of the US only benefited the rich

• Jackson moved government money for each state’s bank

• Whig party - disagrees with Jackson, supported the fede govt for economy such as roads, banking and canals, and favored protective tariff

Pet Banks

• Pet banks printed money with no worth

• money was worthless

• Panic 1837 people lost money/businesses, 1/3 out of work

Westernization

• Settlers went to the west for economic opportunities to own/farm land.

• Midwest, Southwest,Texas

• Growth of railroads and canals grew economy and supports settlers.

• America’s rights to the Atlantic to the Pacific

• Expansion of the white has disturbed the economy and culture of others

• Settlers pushed illegally on lands owned by American Indians
