PaaS

A cloud computing service that provides hardware and an operating system and is responsible for updating and maintaining both. 

PAN

small network used for communicating between personal devices.

patch cable

A network cable that is used to connect a PC to a hub, switch, or router. 

patch panel

A device that provides multiple network ports for cables that converge in one location such as an electrical closet or server room. 

plenum

airspaces between the floors of buildings. 

PoE injector

A device that adds power to an Ethernet cable so the cable can provide power to a device.

PoE-rated switch

uses the Power over Ethernet feature to allow power to be transmitted over Ethernet  cable. 

port flapping

occurs when a particular interface or port on a switch is continually going up and down. 

power over Ethernet (PoE)

a PoE standard that transmits power over an Ethernet cable that is specified in IEEE 802.3af & sends up a maximum of 15.4 watts of power through CAT-5 cabling to the device. 

private cloud

serves only one customer or organization and can be located on the customer's premises or off the customer's premises. 

public cloud

Provides cloud services to just about anyone. 

punchdown tool

A hand tool used to punch individual wires from a network cable into their slots to terminate the cable. 

rapid elasticity

A cloud computing service that is capable of scaling up or down as a customer's need level changes. 

repeater

A networking device that amplifies and retransmits a wireless signal to a wider coverage area and uses a new network name for the rebroadcast. 

SaaS

a subscription service where you purchase licenses for software that expire at a certain date.

SAN

a specialized, high-speed network for storing and sharing files. 

Sandbox

an isolated environment where users and developers can learn and experiment safely without affecting the live environment. 

shielded twisted-pair (STP) cable

A cable that is made of one or more twisted pairs of wires and is surrounded by a metal shield. 

SIM (subscriber identity module) card

a small flash memory card that contains all the information a device needs to connect to a GSM or LTE cellular network, including password and other authentication information needed to access the network, encryption standards used, and the services that a subscription includes.

software-defined networking (SDN)

the use of software applications and programs to virtualize networking by replicating how a switch, router, or other networking hardware functions, while constantly monitoring the status of each device. 

straight-through cable

An Ethernet cable used to connect a computer to a switch or other network device. Also called a patch cable. 

supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA)

embedded computer systems designed to monitor and control machinery from a single location. 

T568A

Standards for wiring twisted-pair network cabling and RJ-45 connectors; in T568A, the green pair of wires is connected to pins 1 and 2 and the orange pair is connected to pins 3 and 6. 

T568B

Standards for wiring twisted-pair network cabling and RJ-45 connectors; in T568B, the orange pair of wires uses pins 1 and 2 and the green pair is connected to pins 3 and 6. 

toner probe

A two-part kit used to find cables in the walls of a building. The toner connects to one end of the cable and puts out a pulsating tone that the probe can sense.

Unified Threat Management (UTM)

A computer, security appliance, network appliance, or Internet appliance that stands between the Internet and a private network. A UTM device runs a firewall, anti-malware software, and other software to protect the network, and is considered a next-generation firewall. 

Unshielded Twisted-Pair (UTP) cable

Twisted-pair networking cable commonly used on LANs that is less expensive than STP cable and does not contain shielding to prevent electromagnetic interference. 

virtual desktop

When a hypervisor manages a virtual machine and presents the VM's desktop to a user. A remote user normally views and manages the virtual desktop via a browser on the local computer.

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)

A presentation of a virtual desktop made to a client computer by a server that is serving up a virtual machine. 

Virtual LAN (VLAN)

A subnet of a larger network created to reduce network traffic.

Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Allows a secure private connection over a public network, using an encrypted 'tunnel'. 

Wide Area Network (WAN)

A network that connects devices in geographically separated areas.

Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)

Type of LAN that doesn't use wires or cables to create connections, but instead transmits data over radio or infrared waves. 

XaaS

a cloud computing model that can work with a combination of other models: SaaS, IaaS, PaaS.
