Patient protection and affordable care act
Aka Obama care or ACA, this act expanded access to more affordable, quality, healthcare insurance, and increase consumer insurance protection. Emphasized prevention, wellness, and curbing healthcare costs
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA)
Give patients rights over their health information and sets rules/limits on who can look and receive patients private information (applies to all forms of information)
Health information technology for economic and clinical health (HITECH) act
Expands on HIPAA and includes provisions that allow for increased enforcement of the privacy and security of electronic transmission of patient information (can sell patient info)
Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSH) act
Over seen by OSHA and hold employers accountable for maintaining a safe and healthy work place by providing training, outreach, education, and assistance
Controlled Substances Act (CSA)
Federal policy that regulates the manufacturing and distribution of controlled substances, including narcotics, depressants, and stimulants.
The emergency medical treatment and active labor act (EMTALA)
Requires any emergency hospital departments that receives federal funding (Medicare/medicad) to provide appropriate medical screening to patients seeking treatment, as long as it is a emergency situation.
The clinical laboratory improvement act (CLIA)
A group of laws that regulate all laboratory facilities to ensure safe handling of specimens. It regulates the the accuracy and time lines of testing
Title VII of Civil Rights Act of 1964
Prohibits employers with 15 or more employees from discriminating on the basis of race, national origin, gender, religion, medical conditions, pregnancy, or sex (including sexual harassment)
Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA)
Forbids discrimination against any applicant or employee who could preform a job regardless of a disability. Also requires the employer to provide reasonable accommodations that are necessary for the employee to preform the job successfully
Good Samaritan Act
Allows bystanders to intervene in emergency situations without fear of being sued if the their actions inadvertently contribute to a persons injury or death
Genetic Information Non discrimination Act of 2008 (GINA)
Prohibits discrimination on the basis of genetic information with respect to health insurance and employment
Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act (PSQIA)
