What are viruses?
Tiny, non-living biological infectious agents
What does a virus consist of?
Either a DNA or RNA genome encased in a protein coat known as a capsid
How can viruses reproduce?
By infecting and taking over a living host cell
Once inside a host cell, viruses can
remain dormant for a while
When stimulated into the (lytic) phase, the virus can
insert its own genetic material into that of the host
The genome of both DNA and RNA viruses can either be
single or double-stranded
Animals are eukaryotic and
multicellular
Are animals heterotopic or autotrophic?
Heterotrophic
All animals are motile, even if
only during certain stages of their life
What is the kingdom name Animalia also known as?
Metazoa
What is the subkingdom Paraoza?
Sponges and Trichoplax
Sponges and Trichoplax have differentiated cells but no distinct
tissues or body symmetry
What is the subkingdom Eumetazoa?
All other animals, with two or three distinct layers of cells with differentiated tissues and either radial or bilateral body symmetry
Does the Parazoa have body symmetry?
No, because it does not have differentiated tissue
What kingdom is algae?
Plantae
The cell walls of plants consist primarily of
Cellulose and lignin
Green plants produce most of the world’s molecular
oxygen, through photosynthesis
Plants can also serve as
foods, ornaments, medicines, and drugs
The scientific study of plants is known as
Botany
