Therapeutic Classification
Antipyretic, Non-opioid Analgesic
Mechanism of Action
Blocks COX enzyme and inhibits thromboxane A2 → prevents platelet aggregation
Therapeutic Use
Decrease risk of MI, stroke, angina, pain, fever, arthritis
Complications
GI bleed, indigestion, nausea, hypersensitivity
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity, bleeding disorders, active GI bleed
Precautions
Liver/renal disease, alcohol use
Medication Administration:
PO after meal or with food; chew if not extended release
Interactions
Anticoagulants, ibuprofen (blocks platelet effect)
Nursing Interventions
Monitor for GI bleed, I&O, hypersensitivity, toxicity signs
Client Education:
Take with full glass of water, avoid before surgery (1 week), report unusual bleeding
