What is Social Science?
A broad discipline that examines human society and social relationships.
Name key disciplines within Social Science.
Anthropology, Sociology, Psychology, Political Sciences, Economics, Geography, History.
What is Social Science used for?
To distinguish the subject from the natural sciences and deals with all aspects of the group life of human beings.
What does Natural Science deal with?
The natural environment in which humans exist.
Examples of Natural Science
Biology, chemistry, geology, or physics that deals with the objects, phenomena, or laws of nature and the physical world
What is the scientific method?
A system of rational enquiry based on the empirical testing of facts.
What does the scientific method aim at?
Obtaining evidence that can be verified and replicated; judgment is with held until supported by overwhelming ‘proof’.
The nature of the scientific method
Observation, Formulate a problem or question, Collection and classification of more facts, Generalization, Formulate a hypothesis, Testing the hypothesis, Retest and reformulate the theory
Social science compared to natural science
The study and knowledge of the social world (a created world).
Social science is not a natural science but it is a science none the less
