Word Root
The basic meaning of a medical term.
Prefix
A word part that modifies the meaning of the root, indicating speed, location, or amount.
Suffix
A word part that describes conditions or procedures.
Sagittal Plane
Divides the body into right and left sections.
Coronal Plane
Divides the body into front and back sections.
Transverse Plane
Divides the body into upper and lower sections.
Anterior
The front of the body.
Posterior
The back of the body.
Superior
Above or higher than another structure.
Inferior
Below or lower than another structure.
Medial
Toward the midline of the body.
Lateral
Away from the midline of the body.
Proximal
Closer to the point of attachment.
Distal
Farther from the point of attachment.
Hypertension
High blood pressure.
Thrombus
A blood clot.
Angioplasty
Balloon opening of a vessel.
Cardiomegaly
Enlarged heart.
Bronchoscopy
Visual examination of the bronchi.
Dyspnea
Difficulty breathing.
Polyuria
Frequent urination.
Nephrologist
A kidney specialist.
Hysterectomy
Surgical removal of the uterus.
Carcinoma
A malignant tumor.
Lumpectomy
Removal of a lump or tumor.
Phlebotomy
Incision into a vein or drawing blood.
Echocardiogram
An ultrasound of the heart.
