Oudnederlands
The early Dutch language, encompassing various related West Germanic dialects spoken from around 800 to 1150 A.D.
Middelnederlands
The stage of Dutch language between 1150 and 1500 A.D. characterized by the emergence of vernacular written texts alongside Latin.
Nieuwnederlands
Modern Dutch language starting from 1500 A.D. which saw the standardization and widespread use of Dutch in literature and administration.
Volksverhuizingen
The migrations of various Germanic tribes into the Roman Empire's territories, particularly in the context of the Dutch language origins.
Dialect
Regional variations of a language within a country, each with distinct phonetic and grammatical features.
Spelling
The conventional method of representing a word in writing; there was considerable variation in spelling during the Middle Dutch period.
Standardtaal
A unified dialect of a language that is used for official and formal communications.
Egodocument
Personal writings, often in the first person, created by ordinary individuals, giving insights into historical perspectives.
Toon
The characteristic manner of expression in writing, showcasing the author's emotional and aesthetic intent.
Glosse
Marginal or interlinear notes written to explain or translate difficult Latin words into vernacular during the medieval period.
