RACE
Rescue, Alarm, Contain, Extinguish/Evacuate.
PASS
Pull the pin, Aim at base, Squeeze handle, Sweep side to side.
Class C Fire Extinguisher
Extinguisher (often CO₂) designed for electrical fires in hospital settings.
Oxygen Shutoff Valve
Main control that stops oxygen flow; must be located and turned off in a fire emergency.
Grounded Plug
Three-prong electrical plug required for equipment used near patients or water to prevent shock.
Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
OSHA-mandated document that lists hazards, handling, and first-aid measures for each chemical.
Eyewash Station
First-aid fixture that flushes water into the eyes promptly after chemical splashes.
Body Mechanics
Principles of proper body alignment, movement, and balance used to protect workers and patients.
Base of Support
Broad stance adopted to improve stability when lifting or moving patients or objects.
Recumbent Position
Any lying-down posture of the patient.
Supine Position
Patient lies on the back, face upward.
Prone Position
Patient lies on the abdomen, face downward.
Lateral Position
Patient lies on either side.
Sims Position
Semi-prone position with patient lying on left side, right knee and thigh drawn up.
Fowler Position
Patient semi-seated with head of bed elevated 45–60°.
Semi-Fowler Position
Patient semi-seated with head of bed elevated about 30°.
Trendelenburg Position
Patient supine with table tilted so head is lower than feet.
Knee-Chest Position
Patient rests on knees and chest with hips elevated.
Lithotomy Position
Supine position with hips and knees flexed and feet in stirrups, used for pelvic exams.
Orthostatic Hypotension
Drop in blood pressure when a patient stands, causing dizziness; allow time to stabilize after sitting up.
Immobilization Devices
Tools such as straps or pads used to stabilize and prevent motion during procedures, not requiring a physician’s order.
Fall Risk
Increased likelihood of patient falling, particularly high in elderly or debilitated individuals.
