Epithet
A descriptive word or phrase that expresses a quality or idea. Example: "Jack the Ripper"
Euphony
Pleasant, smooth-sounding language. Example: "The rain hitting the window was a euphony."
Hackneyed
A cliché; an overused or unoriginal phrase. Example: "You snooze, you lose"
Hypocatastasis
A type of metaphor where one thing is named and another is implied. Example: "Fabulous" (instead of "You are fabulous")
Hypophora
Asking a question and immediately answering it. Example: "Why do we study vocab? Here's why."
Lexicon
A dictionary or the vocabulary of a language. Example: "Go grab a lexicon and look up the word."
Meiosis
An expressive understatement. Example: "He's really fond of treats" (about a fat cat)
Paradox
A statement that seems contradictory but reveals a truth. Example: "The best company I have is when I'm alone."
Pejorative
Expressing disapproval or a negative meaning. Example: "Pejorative glance"
Pleonasm
Redundant or repetitive wording for emphasis. Example: "I saw it with my own eyes."
Allusion
An indirect reference to something. Example: "In Beowulf, there is an allusion to Cain and Abel."
Antanaclasis
Repetition of a word where the meaning changes. Example: "I could count on her to count the money."
Apophasis
Bringing something up by saying you won't mention it. Example: "We're not going to mention the broken vase?"
Asterismos
Adding an unnecessary word at the beginning for emphasis. Example: "Hey, I need you to write this down."
Aversion
A strong dislike. Example: "I have an aversion to school."
Bdelygmia
Expressing hatred or disgust through vivid language. Example: "You're a snake."
Conundrum
A difficult problem or puzzle. Example: "Important conflicting events"
Derived
Established or obtained through reasoning or deduction. Example: "The concoction was derived from salt water and flour."
Discourse
Extended discussion or communication. Example: "Political discourse is necessary to pass bills."
Epistrophe
Repetition of words at the end of successive clauses. Example: "of the people, for the people, by the people"
