Testes
the gonads or reproductive glands of the male body, analogous to the female ovaries
Seminiferous tubules (parts of testes)
manufacture sperm cells (spermatogenesis)
Interstitial cells (parts of the testes)
produce sex hormones (testosterone)
Epididymis
Sperm are stored here in which they mature for as long as six weeks
Vas deferens
Upon ejaculation, the sperm pass from the epididymis into the vas deferens. The vas passes up and out of the scrotum and toward the prostate.
Seminal vesicles
are two saclike structures that lie above the prostate, behind the bladder, and in front of the rectum. They produce about 60 percent of the seminal fluid, or ejaculate
Prostate
The prostate secretes a milky alkaline fluid that is part of the ejaculate.
Glans
Tip of the penis
Urethral opening
The opening through which urine and semen pass
Corona
The raised ridge at the edge of the glans.
Corpora Cavernosa
The two spongy bodies lying on top of the penis
Corpus Spongiosum
The single spongy body lying on the bottom of the penis.
Ovaries
The ovaries are two organs about the size and shape of unshelled almonds; they lie on either side of the uterus.
2 functions of the ovaries
produce eggs (ova)
Manufacture sex hormones estrogen and progesterone
Fallopian tubes
also called oviducts (âegg ductsâ)
narrow and lined with cilia
pathway by which the egg travels toward the uterus and the sperm reach the egg.
Infundibulum
Fertilization of the egg
the section of the tube closest to the ovary; the fertilized egg then
travels the rest of the way through the tube to the uterus.
Uterus (3 parts)
Fundus (top)
Main body
Cervix (bottom)
Uterus (3 layers)
Endometrium â contains glands and blood vessels
Myometrium â contains primarily of muscles
Perimetrium â outer cover
Vagina (âbirth canalâ)
The vagina is the tube-shaped organ into which the penis is inserted during coitus; it also receives the ejaculate.
Mons pubis
The mons pubis is the rounded, fatty pad of tissue, covered with pubic hair, at the front of the body. It is also called the mons or the mons veneris, for âmountain of Venusâ.
parts of the Clitoris
Tip
Shaft
Two crura
Tip (glans)
a knob of tissue situated externally in front of the vaginal opening and the urethral opening;
Shaft (Clitoris)
consisting of two corpora cavernosa (spongy bodies similar to those in the maleâs penis) that extends perhaps an inch into the body
Two crura (clitoris)
longer spongy bodies that lie deep in the body and run from the tip of the clitoris to either side of the vagina, under the major lips
Labia majora
The outer lips are rounded pads of fatty tissue lying along both sides of the vaginal opening; they are covered with pubic hair.
Labia minora
The inner lips are two hairless folds of skin lying between the outer lips and running right along the edge of the vaginal opening.
Mammary glands
Glands responsible for milk production and neonatal growth, each with a separate opening to the nipple, and of fatty and fibrous tissues that surround the clusters of these glands.
Lactiferous (Milk) Ducts
Assists in lactation by transporting milk from mammary glands to the nipple.
What do you collectively call the external female sexual organs?
Vulva
Skeneâs gland
The Skeneâs gland, or female prostate (also called the paraurethral gland), lies between the wall of the urethra and the wall of the vagina
