Globalization
The process of the world becoming more interconnected.
Forces of globalization
Trade: the exchange between people to obtain things they need/want.
Transportation: moves and transports products at a rapid pace.
Communication: ex. Technology makes it very easy for people across the world to exchange information quickly.
Media: allows people to gather information globally from multiple perspectives, opinions, and places.
Effects of globalization
Marginalization: puts a groups of people in a lower position that is powerless.
Causes people to prioritize needed adjustments which can lead to assimilation.
Ex. People of lubicon.
Accommodation: the adjustment and adaptation of people or groups compromising to allow for differences.
Can lead to assimilation.
Acculturation: process of adaption to a new society.
Also can lead to assimilation.
Assimilation: someone fully adjusted to a new culture. Causes them to be more dominant to a new culture rather than their original.
Causes them to loose traits of their country/culture or origin.
Integration: the equal opportunity for participation fo different groups in society.
Ex. Everyone gets the same education and opportunity’s.
Dimensions of globalization
Economic: trade, transportation, communication systems, promoting worldwide commerce and business.
Social: includes food, media, entertainment, media, and pop culture.
Political: democracy, binding of nations and citizens within the country and world.
Ex. Governments helping other country’s.
Environmental: when society makes collective dedications based on the environment. It is the environmental impact of globalization.
Ex. Plastic to paper straws.

Global village:
Its easy to talk to people across the world and makes the world small hense the world « village »
One laptop per child
A goal and project to minimize digital divide and for laptops to be universally available for kids.

Over consomption/reliability of technology devices. And be less connected with reality
Ex. Someone on their phone at a restaurant
Pop culture
the culture of the people. The latest trends, often American influenced culture and social media.
Universalization
Things that are available globally.
Ex. McDonald’s, cellphones.
Hybridization
The blending of two or more cultures and is the process of a more diverse atmosphere.
Ex. Restaurants with different nationality’s of food.
Dominance of American media
Hollywood has been a major contributor for the dominance that America has on the media.

The distinction between people or parts of the world that do, and don’t have access to technology/internet/media.
Americanization
The assimilation of immigrants adaption to traditional American traits/norms. Or even trends or American media.
Collective identity vs individual identity.
Collective identity is what groups/collectives you identity with.
individual identity is who you identity as an individual. Your beliefs/what you wear, like how you choose to express yourself.
containerization
Large containers used to transport goods often on a ship and efficiently transport stuff at a rapid pace.

Ex. News coverage
Cultural content laws
laws passed by a government to protect a endangered culture. States that 30% of music must be Canadian, and 60% of programming must be Canadian.
Banana wars
People fought over bananas during a shortage. European countries changed trade laws to help farmers in their former colonies. After changing the banana importing system, bananas were easier to import from all countries.
Métis revitalization
The MNA formed a group to promote and affirm their collective identity. During the 1990s and into this century, a membership of MNA rose by 300 per cent. Today more than 35009 Métis people belong to the group.
Evo morales
He was the first indigenous president. He pledged to end 500 years of injustice against his people. He also wanted to take control of the countries natural recourses out of the hands of corporations and give it back to the people of Bolivia.

87 countries voted to delay passage of the declaration of indigenous rights. As a result they did not pass the law. In 2006 the declaration was affirmed diverse rights regarding many aspects of their human rights.

Media Convergence: the use of electronic devices to integrate media such as newspapers, books, tv, and the internet.
Media concentration: the gathering of ownership of newspapers and other media in the hands of a few corporations.

The way a group of people affirm their culture and protect it from assimilation.

Pros and cons of cultural revitalization
Pros: forces people to speak the same language. Greater understanding, shared identity.
Bad: some people have lost important aspects of their culture.
